Great Flash for the Price!, October 9, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sony HVLF20S Flash for Sony Nex Series (Not compatible with NEX 7) (Electronics) Simple, easy to use flash as long as you're not expecting professional results. From my 3 week experience this flash produces great results for the average user in indoor settings. Given that it's for the NEX series of cameras, it's definitely not meant for someone expecting complete control and professional results, but if you're an average to above average photographer looking to boost the indoor (and even outdoor) performance of your NEX series camera, then this is a no-brainer. Compared to the $300-$400 and up flashes for DSLRs, you really can't complain.
Given that, personally there is one nuance that I have a hard time getting over. I traded in my Canon T1i for a NEX-5 because it was the best all-around option for both my wife and myself. With the T1i I had a manual flash that I could adjust to take both vertical and horizontal photos. With this, if you want to use the flash in bounce mode, you're stuck taking horizontal photos. For protection of the lens and best control of flare, I like to keep the lens shade on. In addition, I found the results from the original flash a bit harsh.
Early Testing -
The first shots on this HVLF20S flash were very impressive. When I shot photos at close range, with the flash in the bounce setting, the photos never burned out. When you shoot verticals, you can bounce off a wall if you'd like. It's not critical that it doesn't rotate. In the bounce mode, lighting seems very natural, with little effort. The light is soft and diffused and there is very little or no shadow behind the subject.
I also set the flash to different power settings to get various results, �2 stops. I dedicated one of the "quick buttons" to flash compensation so that when I use the flash, it automatically is there without having to go back... Read more

As an outdoor photographer I must have a good bright flash and this has more the twice the flash power over the little stock unit.
