5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice affordable basic yet potent off-camera flash, July 21, 2011

I've used this flash along with my Canon 430EX and Vivitar 285HV for several months now, and I really like it. If you don't know what you're looking at, this is a FULL MANUAL flash, meaning it will not communicate with your camera to do any sort of automatic TTL metering. You have to tell the flash exactly what you want it to do. (LumoPro left out some common features to keep the price down.) I love the manual control of this flash, but it's not for everybody.

I like using this flash. It works very well. I wish I had another one! It's great for off camera work with any number of modifiers. The power level is supposed to be similar to that of a Canon 580EXII and the equivalent Nikon flash, but I haven't tested that. I'll take their word for it.

The LP160 will sync by any of 4 methods, and I've found them all to be useful at one time or another. (This is why the LP160 is called the "Quad-Sync Flash.")
First is the optical slave. It's very sensitive, and will... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting ready to purchase a 2nd unit, October 19, 2011

This is one of my favorite flashes to carry around with me anytime I need to use an off camera flash. It's powerful, very easy to use, affordable, and allows me to use it every way I find necessary. I've triggered this unit via the optical slave, Pocket Wizards, Phottix Strato radio triggers, by cable, and on occasion, while on top of my camera's hot shoe.

This flash is a manual flash, but that's what I prefer when I'm either shooting portraits or in an environment that doesn't have your typical indoor lighting, such as a dark night club with flashing lights.

If you're not comfortable shooting with manual flashes, then you should either learn how to use them or move on to one of the major brand's mid level or flagship flashes, just keep in mind you will pay 3 to 4 times for the automatic TTL features. You could also look into some of the other 3rd party brands that carry flashes that support TTL, such as SunPak.

What I really like about this flash is... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic manual flash, June 17, 2011

I have a few of these. Their build quality is quite good. Runs well on my rechargeable batteries (Eneloops and Energizer). Good range of motion on the flash head. The size of the light itself is larger than any of my other flashes.

Overall, great buy.
