Metz 50 AF-1 MZ 50312OPL Digital Flash for Olympus, Panasonic and Leica Cameras Reviews
13 of 14 people found the following review helpful A great, powerful unit with plenty of adjustable features!, July 10, 2011 By jambaj0e "Joe" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Metz 50 AF-1 MZ 50312OPL Digital Flash for Olympus, Panasonic and Leica Cameras (Electronics) This is my first flash that I'm using with my Olympus E-PL2. I had the Metz 44AF for a couple of days, but returned it since it doesn't allow you to change the zoom manually (as opposed to TTL) and do high-speed Sync. The Metz 50 AF does all that, plus more! Everything is controllable on the unit itself, which is important if you're using it as a kicker, hair light, fill, etc, as well as main light on a stand and you want a consistent output independent of where you are with the camera. It even can do a version of the modeling light!
The fact that you can upgrade the firmware means that when I move up to another Micro 4/3rds camera (Olympus E-P3 or maybe the Pen Pro if it comes out), I can still use this. Runs great with my wireless sync in manual mode and as wireless TTL triggered by my camera.
About the only thing that I wish this has is a sync cord jack. Otherwise, it's a great combination of value, power, brightness, recycle time, and even size... Read more
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful Works well on GH2, November 5, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Metz 50 AF-1 MZ 50312OPL Digital Flash for Olympus, Panasonic and Leica Cameras (Electronics) This flash has worked really well on my GH2. I have mostly used TTL mode and the exposure come out correct for the most part.
The flash looks large in comparison to GH2 body but not too bulky.
I was concerned about the menu access based on other reviews I read. I think some of these reviews are a little misleading. It is true that you have press 2 buttons simultaneously in order to access some of the settings. However, the settings you are likely to use the most often, i.e. TTL, manual modes, High Sync speed, EV compensation, can all be changed or adjusted with one press of a button. I think it is a small compromise for the significantly lower cost compared to the Oly or Panasonic equivalent.
The flash also has a servo function that allows it be triggered by another flash which work pretty well.
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful Buy It, September 3, 2011 By This review is from: Metz 50 AF-1 MZ 50312OPL Digital Flash for Olympus, Panasonic and Leica Cameras (Electronics) I use this with my Panasonic DMC-LX3 10.1MP Digital Camera with 24mm Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black), and couldn't imagine shooting without it. It is larger and heavier than the camera itself, but makes a great handle--I just hold the camera by the flash all the time, and enjoy the additional stability.
When shooting at dusk, set on TTL and dial down the power by a stop, and well-exposed images are a piece of cake.
Last, the build quality of this flash is excellent: It appears that this model hasn't gotten "quality cancer" as has much of Metz's product line.
